The Princess in the Dragon's Lair

I wrote this after a really bad day, when I realized how fortunate I am to have family to look after me and my son. So this is dedicated to all of those less fortunate who don't have anyone to help and have ended up homeless.

Lyrics by Kim Brownlee
Music by The Politician

We grow up hearing fairy tales that sound something like
Long ago there was a princess who lived in a beautiful castle
with a handsome Prince and they lived happily ever after--

But that's not how this story ends...

A single mom workin' hard to make a good home for her child
A big company that pays real well has suddenly gone wild
Worked too many hours overtime to clean up the company's mess
Till it's left both of her hands useless, fused her neck,
And left her mind distressed
She can't lift ten pounds, sign her name or brush her own hair
There's nothin left now but pain, work comp and disability checks

She can ask what to do but it's clear they don't care
It's so unfair in the Dragon's Lair
Where the vicious beast loves to feast
On the lives of the innocent

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Spinal Fusion, Myofascial Pain Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome;
she never knew what any of these were... she does now

She can't make her meals or clean her floors
Can't hold her child or her pain will soar
She's in constant pain, can't concentrate, rehabilitate --

No one could understand the pain she's in
She sleeps alone at night, no thoughts of men
She was happy once, healthy without any pain
How long has it been?

She can ask what to do but it's clear they don't care
It's so unfair in the Dragon's Lair
Where the vicious beast loves to feast
On the lives of the innocent

A couple years go by, they say she's been overpaid
They take back her pay, even tho' it's their mistake
She cries and pleads, but she has no say

Her lawyer says it's wrong, but still she's reamed
She lost her health, her wealth, her home, her dream
And now her child's been taken away...

There's nothin' to do but scream-- this is no dream

She can ask what to do but it's clear they don't care
It's so unfair in the Dragon's Lair
Where the vicious beast loves to feast
On the lives of the innocent

From a small happy family in a beautiful house
on a hill that overlooked a lake,
to childless and livin’ on the street,
begging for food on the street corners
and sleepin’ in the rain
till the morning she doesn't wake
and they go on their way, forget her name
And take no responsibility for the lives they maimed

You can ask what to do but it's clear they don't care
It's so unfair in the Dragon's Lair
Where the vicious beast loves to feast
On the lives of the innocent
(repeat)

That's what goes on in the Dragon's Lair
